Gendry Might Not Return to Dragonstone on 'GoT' After All

Though it appears that Gendry could return in Game of Thrones Season 7, it’s good to remember that often nothing in this world is exactly what it seems.

Spoilers have been leaking from the Game of Thrones Season 7 set faster than Varys can teleport from Meereen to Dorne. Chief among them is the long-awaited return of ill-fated rower Gendry, who has been missing since Season 3. But before you get too hyped to see him again, there’s one important detail to remember. Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have trolled their spoiler-seeking audience with false reports in the past. Could Gendry be one of them? Yes and no.

Now, flying an actor out to the set and dressing them up just to mess with the spoiler-reports sounds like an insane plan, but Benioff and Weiss have set a precedent for it. So in the same vein, Gendry’s presence at Dragonstone and his mysterious mission with Jon, Davos, and Jorah to find the secret of Greyscale could indeed be a red herring.

It’s entirely possible the GoT showrunners have posed Gendry with Jon Snow in order to distract set spies from Jon and Daenerys meeting — just as they tried to plant Shae to distract from Jon’s battlefield pictures in Season 6.

But on the other hand, it’s ludicrously unlikely that GoT flew Joe Dempsie out to set after suspending him for four seasons of purgatory just to fool fans. Not to mention, it would be cruel and unusual punishment to Dempsie, who has been patiently awaiting his return while acknowledging the fact that his character is now an internet joke.

We’re going to look into the flames then and predict Season 7’s future: Although Benioff and Weiss could indeed be fooling us with Gendry’s presence at Dragonstone, his presence on the set is a done deal.

But then again, who knows what mysterious powers lie in the flames. The night is dark and full of terrors, after all.
