There will be some new visitors to the park in Jurassic World 2, and we now know one of the leading pieces of dino-bait is a young girl named Lucy. Jurassic World 2’s producers recently put out a casting call for the role of “Lucy,” a precocious 9-year-old girl who will inevitably have to run from gigantic prehistoric beasts that want to eat her.
News of the casting call comes from Jurassic Park fansite Jurassic Outpost via casting site Actors Access. Heres the character description in full:
She is a young girl around 9 years of age. The girl playing “Lucy” must be at least 9 years of age by February 2017, but cannot be over 10 years old. She must be a sensitive and clever actress capable of handling long and complex scenes. Lucy must be able to handle a range of emotions from tender moments with her father, to anxiety, bravery, and shock.
This role represents a huge and exciting opportunity for a young actress to play a significant role in a major Hollywood blockbuster.
The first thing that jumps out is that Lucy doesn’t seem like a secondary character. Whoever gets to be Lucy will have to be a young actress capable of “complex” scenes that also has to hold her own next to the charm of someone like Chris Pratt’s Owen Grady character.
These Jurassic movies are by no means filled with Oscar-caliber performances, but it seems the filmmakers are looking for someone who won’t just be adolescent background fodder like Ty Simpkins and Nick Robinson were in Jurassic World. Lucy seems like she’ll be like a younger mash-up of Tim and Lex from Steven Spielberg’s original movie and mean much more to the plot.
Secondly, it looks like a family unit will return to the Jurassic franchise too. Any situation involving “a range of emotions from tender moments” to “anxiety, bravery, and shock” with the unnamed father character mentioned means Lucy and dear old dad will definitely get separated at some point in the park and reunite to make their fractured familial bond even stronger.
This kind of thing has been done in both The Lost World and Jurassic Park III, so it’s well-trod territory. But then again Jurassic World was a rehash of all the movies in the franchise that came before it so it makes sense they’d recycle even more narratives.
Production on Jurassic World 2 is supposed to begin early in 2017, so we’ll get to know who Lucy is very soon. Jurassic World 2 is set for a release on June 22, 2018.
