With all these new Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 promotions, the one question on everyone’s mind is this: What’s going on with Baby Groot?
Seriously, what’s his deal? Why’s he so adorable? Will he be doing things aside from being incredibly cute? Who made him the tiny Baby Groot Star-Lord jacket? Here’s the definitive rundown of all the Baby Groot happenings in the new Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 teaser.
For those of you who are unfortunate enough to not know, Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel) is the sentient tree alien who works together with Rocket Racoon (Bradley Cooper) as bounty hunters. After getting imprisoned alongside Peter Quill, Gamora, and Drax, they join together and form the Guardians of the Galaxy. Unfortunately, in the first film, Groot heroically sacrificed himself to protect his beloved teammates from getting blown to bits. Luckily for the Galaxy, Groot survived in the form of a baby branch that will eventually grow back into a full Groot.

So what’s been happening since then? Well for starters, he’s bigger than when he was just a twig in a pot.
We also know that he’s got an adorable little Star-Lord jacket.
Don’t let the jacket fool you though: Groot clearly has no problem being around the hyper-violent situations the Guardians find themselves in, even in his new miniature form. Does this mean that Groot kept his personality and memories from before he was cut down? Or does it just mean that baby Groot might be more cold-hearted than we could ever know?
Both Marvel producer Kevin Feige and director James Gunn give contradictory answers when asked whether Baby Groot is just a tiny Regular Groot, citing the comics where Groot typically keeps his memories, but sometimes doesn’t. We’ll have to see how the issue of Groot’s new form will play out in the sequel.
