The Guardians of the Galaxy Just Got Two Dangerous New Members

The gang’s all here. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 just got a sweet new poster that shows off some surprising new additions to the main team. Specifically Star-Lord’s adoptive space pirate dad, Yondu; and Gamora’s (formerly?) evil sister Nebula.

Obviously there’s a lot to unpack here. Why are two of the kinda-bad guys from the last movie teamed up with the kinda-good guys in the second movie? It might have something to do with the emerging theme of the sequel around family, and Yondu and Nubula’s relationships with Quill and Gamora.

While details for the sequel are still under-wraps, we know that Quill will come face-to-face with his real father — a living planet played by Kurt Russell — at some point in the film. As the person who actually raised Peter for most of his life, Yondu, might have some feelings regarding that encounter. Likewise, after failing their father in the first film, it’s highly unlikely Nebula would be allowed to stay on Team Thanos. Nebula joining the Guardians might just be the perfect chance to reconnect with her sister.

The poster itself just evokes that effortless “cool” James Gunn cultivated throughout the first Guardians of the Galaxy film. Doing their best Ramones impersonation, the Guardians clearly don’t care about dumb things like rules or manners. They only care about saving the galaxy and bucking established societal norms.

If you’re not convinced of the Guardian’s rogue status, please note Baby Groot, the most adorable rogue, hugging Quill’s feet in the poster.

What a bunch of punks.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is scheduled for release on May 5, 2017.
