J.J. Abrams Implies Kylo Ren Didn't Want to Kill Han Solo

It’s very possible that Kylo Ren wants to turn away from the Dark side of the Force and back toward the Light. The director of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, J.J. Abrams recently revealed he thinks Kylo Ren — formerly Ben Solo — decided to stab his father, Han Solo, with a lightsaber.

“I think that Kylo Ren in this moment is actually being convinced to walk away from this,” Abrams said in an clip released on Den of GeekUK. This clip is a preview of several special features which will appear on the recently-announced 3D Collector’s Edition of The Force Awakens, due out in later this month in the UK and November in the U.S.

While Abrams isn’t saying that Kylo Ren will turn back to the side of light, he is saying outright that in some moment in that conversation, Han was getting through to his son. “Snoke is, as Han says, using him, and I think that somewhere… Ben knows this, but I think that he can’t accept it, deep down. He has gone too far,” the director said.

We have no idea still if Kylo Ren will feel guilty enough about his patricide to make amends with the remaining members of his family, or if this guilt will just result in making him even more twisted and evil than before. Still, with his latest comments, J.J. Abrams has confirmed what many fans interpreted from the film itself: that we’re meant to believe Kylo Ren isn’t entirely confident about the bold decisions he’s making. If all of this continues along in traditional Star Wars fashion, then we may see Kylo walking away from his dark persona in the next two films and becoming Ben Solo once again. As Leia says in The Force Awakens: “There’s still light in him!”

Star Wars: The Force Awakens 3D 4-Disc Collector’s Edition released on November 15 in the U.S.
