Supergirl Friendzoned Jimmy Olsen So Hard He Became Guardian

by Matt Kim

Yikes, this is gonna be a harsh season for Jimbo. The Season 2 premiere of Supergirl shook some things up for the Kara and Jimmy shippers, when mere in-universe hours after the two shared their first kiss, Kara decided that she just needs to focus on herself. Probably feeling just a little low about that, Jimmy may decide to preoccupy his time by putting on a mask and becoming the DC superhero called Guardian.

Supergirl executive producer Andrew Kreisberg told members at a press screening for the season’s second episode that Jimmy Olsen has been feeling just a little bit unsatisfied by his life as a perennial sidekick. “So he’s going to decide to become a vigilante and he’s going to become Guardian — complete with the shield which is going to cause a massive problem in his relationship with Kara, because he has decided not to tell her,” Kreisberg explained to journalists.

While the idea of Olsen becoming a superhero because of being friendzoned was just a joke, it seems that his eventual turn to vigilantism will actually cause some issues with his relationship with Kara. This is particularly potent as the second season will focus on the question of who deserves to be a hero in the first place.

DC Comics

In the comics, Guardian is the alter-ego of a cop-turned-vigilante Jim Harper. Jim doesn’t actually have any superpowers, instead relying on an indestructible shield. While the actual “how” of Jimmy becoming Guardian is still a secret, it seems that Olsen will be recruiting his former CatCo Media Networks coworker Winn Schott to act as his “man in the van” while the two become National City’s newest superhero team. Kreisenberg specifically cites the comedic relationship between Jimmy and Winn as a reason why the future crime-fighting pair will be worth watching.

Supergirl airs on the CW Mondays at 8 p.m. ET.
