The standalone Han Solo Star Wars movie won’t make the hyperspace jump to theaters until 2018, but there’s already some casting chatter. Three actresses are reportedly being looked at to play the female lead, and the news might mean that a Star Wars comics character is coming to a galaxy far, far away.
We already know who is going to be playing the younger version of everyone’s favorite rogue: Hail Ceasar! standout Alden Ehrenreich. And according to Variety, he’ll be joined by one of three actresses: Tessa Thompson (Creed), Naomi Scott (Power Rangers), or Zoe Kravitz (Divergent).
All three actresses have the credentials to join Star Wars — they’re all talented, and have (or will have) experience acting in tentpole popcorn movies, Thompson especially, as she’s already slated to join another Disney-owned franchise as Valkyrie in Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok. They’re also all women of color, a welcome bit of interstellar diversity.
They could be playing an entirely new character, sure, but there’s already a character in the current Star Wars canon that they’d be a swell fit for: Han Solo’s ex-wife, Sana Starros.
The character, who wasn’t actually married to Han (though they were romantically involved and once faked it for a job) appeared in the current ongoing Star Wars comic that Marvel’s releasing. She’s a no-nonsense gunslinger with a lot of unseen history with Han, and it would be sweet to see some of their past exploits on the big screen.
She’s a fun character, and it would be a good nod to the comics (not to mention a nice little bit of Disney synergy) if Sana appeared in the Han Solo flick. We’ll probably know more one production starts in 2017, and if not then, before the film comes out on May 25, 2018.
