It’s the end of the line, bub. Hugh Jackman’s final outing as the savage mutant Wolverine has an official title, Logan, and you know what that means. It’s pretty much official that the new film will draw from the 2008 Mark Millar series Old Man Logan. Just like the comic, Logan stars an older, grizzled, and alcoholic Wolverine whose regenerative powers have diminished.
Director James Mangold, who previously directed Jackman in 2013’s The Wolverine, tweeted an image of the script’s second page. In it, Wolverine drops an F-bomb while getting his ass kicked by a group called “the Bangers.”
Mangold also includes three paragraphs of a Shane Black-ish description that talks directly to the reader. Empire provided the whole transcript, which reads:
Now might be a good time to talk about the ‘fights’ described in the next 100 or so pages. Basically, if you’re on the make for a hyper choreographed, gravity defying, city-block destroying CG fuckathon, this aint your movie.
In this flick, people will get hurt or killed when shit falls on them. They will get just as hurt or killed when shit falls on them. They will get just as hurt or just as killed if they get hit with something big and heavy like, say, a car. Should anyone in our story have the misfortune to fall off a roof or out a window, they won’t bounce. They will die.
As for our hero, well, he’s older now and it’s clear his abilities aren’t what they once were. He’s fading on the inside and his diminished healing factor keeps him in a constant state of chronic pain hence booze as a painkiller.”
Logan clearly owes much to Mark Millar’s Old Man Logan. Set in an alternate, desolate future where most of the world’s superheroes were killed, villains have taken over the world. In Sacramento, Wolverine — who hasn’t used his powers in fifty years — tries to carve a meager life until his old friend Hawkeye hires him for a dangerous job that will take him across the Four Kingdoms in the new America.
The film is reportedly only lifting inspiration from Old Man Logan and will not adapt it completely (especially given Hawkeye’s role in the comic). But it will channel the brutality of that comic with Logan rated R by the MPAA.
