It looks like Rogue One character Saw Gerrera may share more with Darth Vader than just the will to fight. It turns out Gerrera has a robotic leg just like Vader, assuming the latest Funko POP! action figure is accurate.
We’ve previously seen the Rebel freedom fighter limping around in the Rogue One teasers, spouting off advice to Felicity Jones’s character Jyn Erso from a Yoda-like hovel on the mysterious planet of Jedha. The Walmart exclusive toy now lets us know why.
Everything we know about the movie version of Gerrera so far suggests that after the character first appeared fully-legged as a leading soldier against the Separatists in the animated Star Wars: The Clone Wars show, he went through some rough times and terrible battles. In the EW article that announced the character, Whitaker said his suit was “for flight, but also for maintenance,” and, “He’s been through many conflicts and many wars, so it’s also about [repairing] some of the many injuries he’s had. He wears it all the time.”
Scope out the vinyl action figure version of Gerrera’s suit below:
Flash forward to Rogue One and he’s in hiding on Jedha, but still being a pain in the ass to the Empire by leading insurgent attacks on Imperial strongholds. The suit he wears means he’s too vulnerable to do the fighting himself, so young, upstart Rebels like Jyn come to him for advice. But what about the leg?
Considering the fact that missing appendages like Luke’s hand are of tantamount importance in the Star Wars saga, perhaps Gerrera’s missing leg links him with the also robotically-inclined Darth Vader somehow. Maybe Vader himself even cut the leg off, and Gerrera’s out for some revenge?
We’ll find out how vulnerable Gerrera is with that missing leg when Rogue One hits theaters on December 16.
