Turns out, the way to kill a demon is to stick a pole straight up its ass.
Each monster has its unique, fatal weakness: traumatic brain injury for zombies, stake through the heart for vampires, silver bullet for werewolves, and if the new series Crazyhead has anything to say, a pole up the ass takes out demons.
Crazyhead is a new series from Misfits creator Howard Overman and focuses on two girls who find themselves the Chosen Ones in a fight against some seriously hellfire-y demons. Amy and Raquel can see demons where most people can’t. Much like ghosts, these demons roam the Earth with unfinished business until they possess unsuspecting living humans. Ghost inside human host = demon.
Armed with poles and emboldened with some self-taught demon-hunting knowledge, Amy and Raquel are tasked with keeping the demons in check. And Crazyhead seems to have more than a little Buffy the Vampire Slayer in its DNA. The show’s tagline is: “In every generation, there’s a chosen one … or two” which is clearly a take on Buffy’s unforgettable intro: “Into every generation a slayer is born.”
Though zombies have been the reigning champs of TV for the last few years, demons are certainly carving themselves a place on the small screen. With shows like Wynonna Earp and Crazyhead, demon-hunting is having a moment.
Where zombies often represent anxieties related to free will and ownership of one’s personhood, the thematic focus of demons is often more closely related to a battle with our inner demons and a sense of good and evil as it pertains to ourselves. How the whole pole in the ass thing figures into that remains to be seen.
Crazyhead premieres on E4 in the UK this fall and will be available on Netflix following the UK premiere.
