Marvel May Produce a New Series Starring Squirrel Girl

by Emily Gaudette

TV Line reports that Marvel is currently selling a New Warriors series to different networks, one centered around Squirrel Girl. Doreen Green, Squirrel Girl’s collegiate, but still-squirrel-y, secret identity, has received buzz in the last few years for several reasons.

First, her reboot comic The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl is a critical darling, praised by analysts and fans alike for making an old, third-rate hero into a self-aware, optimistic and fun protagonist that appeals to kids and adult readers. Second, the cinematic superhero boom has inspired actresses like Anna Kendrick and Stranger Things’s Shannon Purser to publicly request the chance to audition for the role in a Marvel project. It certainly helps that Squirrel Girl’s revamped character is the funniest superhero on Marvel’s comic book roster.

It appears Marvel has moved forward with the plan to produce a live-action Squirrel Girl, at least on television. It’s worth noting that Squirrel Girl is not typically a member of the New Warriors, so producing a show about the group with Doreen as an added member seems like an obvious attempt to capitalize on fan demand.

If Marvel’s New Warriors project is picked up, it will join the ranks of Cloak and Dagger and Runaways, two other superhero TV shows inspiring rumblings among fans and the press. The remaining question is: will New Warriors feature a CGI Tippy Toe, or can we expect a cool puppet?
