The epic fantasy show American Gods, based on Neil Gaiman’s novel of the same name, will feature a whole lotta dick.
This is not a surprise to anyone who read Gaiman’s sprawling novel — which includes sex in which a man is eaten by a vagina, gay deity sex between a man and a mythical desert creature, death by blowjob sex, and a man having sex with a cat-creature. Naturally these scenes will be challenging to depict, and the show could have taken the easy route and cut some of them. But showrunner Bryan Fuller has confirmed he will not be watering down Gaiman’s work, even though that decision comes with a unique host of complications. Namely, to dildo or to digitize your dicks, that is the question?
In a new interview with Ain’t It Cool News, Fuller shared his woes over how to approach getting the best boners for their bucks.
“We have so many visual effects that involve digital erections,” he said. “We have conversations, ‘well, should we get [a] dildo and strap it onto the actors, is that going to be more cost effective? Or is it easier just to give them digital erections?”
Unlike premium cable competitor HBO, which is far more comfortable with female nudity than male, this is rote business for Starz. Between showing flaccid dicks on Spartacus and Outlander and resurrected sandy dicks in Black Sails, the network has never had an issue with equal-opportunity nudity.
In the interview Fuller also confirmed that the infamous orgasm of death scene — aka the death by vagina — will be in the show’s very first episode. A rather ballsy move, Fuller!
American Gods Season 1 will be out at an as-yet unspecified date in 2017.
