DEF CON 24's “Rise of the Machines” Warns of Robot Uprising

Robot Rights Activists are going to have a heyday with this one.

DEF CON, one of the world’s oldest hacker conventions, begins this week in Las Vegas, Nevada. The convention is celebrating its 24th year on the strip and boasts an incredible line-up of speakers and workshops. Highlighted by a Mr. Robot panel, the show may seem like a niche event — so this year, the event staff decided to go big on advertisements and produced an interesting video about a robot uprising.

The film, which depicts helper robots attempting to overthrow their oppressive human masters, ends on a humorous and somber note. It might not sit well with everyone, but at the very least, the creative short film is pretty funny. The video plays on several classic sci-fi notes, and is definitely worth a watch:

Robot uprisings and tensions between humans and robots have been a major talking point as of recent. In the wake of A.I. advancements, compassionate companion robots are on the way, and even video games like Overwatch have used a robot-controlled future as vehicles for their stories.

This year’s DEF CON features talks led by expert hackers with panel titles like “So You Think You Want To Be a Penetration Tester” and “DIY Nukeproofing: A New Dig at ‘Datamining’”. Tickets for the weekend cost $240, and it looks like there’s still room at the event’s host hotel — the Paris/Bally on the strip — to book a night.
