Elon Musk tweeted out a cryptic message today about how the Tesla and SpaceX CEO is working on a new “Master Plan” for the automotive company. On the day of the company’s namesake’s birthday (Nikola Tesla was born July 10, 1856), Musk is looking to take Tesla in a new, or at least updated direction going forward.

Back in 2006, Musk wrote on the company’s blog Tesla’s first master plan. The secret (but public) plan was summarized at the bottom of the post thusly:

  • Build Sports Car
  • Use that money to build an affordable car
  • Use that money to build an even more affordable car
  • While doing above, also provide zero emission electric power generation options
  • Don’t tell anyone

Since then, the company has mainly stuck to the plan, releasing the premium Model S and Model X cars to help pave the way for the moreaffordable Model 3. While the last bit of the plan about not telling anyone seemed to have been ignored, Tesla’s first master plan can be seen as largely a success.

Now that the Model 3 is on the horizon and looks to fulfill the “even more affordable car” portion of Musk’s first master plan, it’s obvious that a new plan needs to be developed for the future.

What could this new plan be? We know that Tesla’s new Gigafactory will have its grand opening soon, along with recent events surrounding Tesla’s autopilot features. Aside from that, it literally could be anything. Maybe Musk is even thinking about bringing back the Tesla coil?
