Netflix Announces It Will Make a 'Punisher' Series
The Punisher is returning to Hell's Kitchen for his very own live-action series on Netflix.
Lock and load. Frank Castle, or “the Punisher,” is getting his own series on Netflix, joined by Hannibal writer Steve Lightfoot as executive producer and showrunner.
The series will star The Walking Dead alum Jon Bernthal reprising his role as Castle, whom he portrayed in the acclaimed second season of Marvel’s Daredevil. Castle is an ex-military man whose family were slaughtered amid a gang shootout, so Castle uses his special skills to avenge their deaths in New York City’s notorious Hell’s Kitchen.
Because he enticed a global audience on Daredevil, Bernthal is getting his own show: “Jon hooked our global audience with his performance as Frank Castle from the moment he stepped on screen in Marvel’s Daredevil, and we are looking forward to seeing more of him in this role under the vision of Steve Lightfoot,” said Cindy Holland, Netflix Vice President of Original Content, in the announcement.
Punisher (final title TBD) will be the sixth Marvel series on Netflix. Two seasons of Daredevil and one season of Jessica Jones have already aired; Luke Cage premieres in September and Iron Fist will follow next year. All the main stars of those shows will team up together, eventually, for Marvel’s Defenders. It is unclear if Bernthal’s Punisher will be a part of Defenders. A premiere date for Punisher was not announced.
