No, 'Harry Potter and the Cursed Child' Isn't a New 'Harry Potter' Novel
The newest entry into the J.K. Rowling canon probably isn't what you think it is.
The internet predictably exploded today when news broke that a new Harry Potter book will be out this summer. If you clicked on any of the articles with misleading headlines like “J.K. Rowling Announces an Eighth Harry Potter Book,” you soon found out that the internet was up to its nasty tricks again and that this news is not what you thought it was. Well, I’m here to tell you that no, there is not a new Harry Potter novel coming out this summer because the world doesn’t work like that.
The misleading announcements in today’s headlines are in reference to a play that will debut in London this summer called Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. The news concerning a new “book” refers to the fact that the play will be adapted into book form by Rowling so those who can’t make it to London to see the play can still indulge in the latest addition to the Harry Potter series. Written by Jack Thorne, the new play is a two-part epic that takes place 19 years after the last Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, and deals with Harry as an adult and his son. Jamie Parker will play Harry, Norma Dumezweni will play Hermoine, and Paul Thornley will play Ron.
Even before the Harry Potter book franchise ended, fans were stressing about what would happen next. Considering how popular the series was, it makes sense that fans were reluctant to let go, finding it difficult to say goodbye to their childhoods. Fans even had three more Harry Potter films to get through by the time the last novel came out, but alas, people are still craving more of the Potter. Feel what you will about the upcoming play and corresponding book, but let’s be clear about one thing: There isn’t another book by J.K. Rowling coming out.
