Dyson V15 Detect uses a laser to reveal dust and control suction power

Dyson's two latest cordless vacuums, the V15 Detect and Omniglide, both come from a galaxy far, far away. One has a laser and the other an illuminated crevice tool that resembles a lightsaber.

Since going full cordless a few years ago, Dyson’s vacuums have only got more powerful. The bins have grown larger and battery life is longer. The new Dyson V15 Detect adds a laser to help reveal dust and control suction power.

No headlight

At first, the laser may seem like a headlight, which other vacuums have had for ages. But there’s actually some high-tech science behind it.

The laser illuminates dust particles you normally can’t see so you know where to clean. But it also talks with the LCD screen to display 1) the number of dust particles and 2) the size of particles which then tells the motor to increase or decrease suction power.

Anti-tangle brush bar

The V15 Detect also has a brush bar with a new conical design that deftly sucks up strands into the bin without wrapping up around the head. A High Torque cleaner head also has “56 polycarbonate teeth which look like a comb” that essentially shreds strings up so they don’t get tangled up. Yes, please!

Does it sound like overkill? 100%. But that’s what Dysons products usually are. And that’s what you’re paying for. No shame in that.

Maybe I’m getting old. Or maybe the pandemic unlocked a part of me that just likes vacuuming during long Zoom calls. The price for the V15 Detect and its laser and anti-tangle design is steep: $699.99, available today. Or wait for it to go on sale at Dyson’s official eBay store. I’ve purchased from it many times and everything is basically new, just open box, and heavily discounted.

There’s one more new Dyson vacuum: the Omni-glide. It’s way smaller than the V15 Detect for easier maneuverability. First, the omnidirectional head with Fluffy cleaner head spins in all directions unlike regular Dyson vacs that only go backward and forward.

Second, the stick-like design (if the V15 is a blaster, then this is lightsaber) makes it easier to lift overhead to suck up dust from room corners (goodbye cobwebs!) and other narrow or hard-to-reach places.

This design is way easier for getting underneath furniture.

It’s a lightsaber!

It comes with several suction heads, but the coolest is the illuminated crevice tool for sucking stuff up in dark places.

Some trade-offs

There’s no LCD or a fancy laser. The motor isn’t as powerful as other Dyson vacs and the bin is smaller too, but the compact design could be a hit with people turned off by how heavy Dyson cleaners can be.

The Dyson Omni-glide is priced at $399.99 and also launches today.
