Audi's EV concept includes a game that projects from its headlights

Audi is giving a prospective glimpse at its electric future.

At the Shanghai Auto Show, the company unveiled a concept for its A6 E-Tron, an all-electric sedan using its own, next-gen EV platform.

While the sedan is still just a concept, Audi says the A6 E-Tron will go into production in 2022, with other additions to the E-Tron lineup, including an SUV, to follow.

The A6 E-Tron will come with specs that align it with other premium electric vehicles, including a 100 kWh battery with an estimated 400 miles of range. The high-efficiency battery will also help on the charging front.

Surprisingly, where the A6 E-Tron gets really interesting, is in its high-tech headlights.

The A6 E-Tron will have Audi’s “Digital Matrix LED headlights” and projectors installed on the sides of the vehicle that enable a number of different features, including...

— A “light carpet” that keeps headlight beams in the driver's lane — Turn signals that are projected from the side of the car — Arrows that are projected from the front of the vehicle onto the road to show the exact alignment of the car’s tires And... Shutterstock

A game (developed by Audi engineers) that can be projected onto a wall and controlled via a smartphone.

“Instead of on a small screen in the cockpit, they’ll see their respective game’s virtual landscapes projected onto the wall in XXL format – and all this via the Digital Matrix LED headlights. Players can stand next to or directly in front of the vehicle for a particularly good view of the game, which is several meters wide.” Audi

Next-gen headlights aren’t the only way the A6 E-Tron plans to use light to its advantage. Audi says the EV will also be able to project symbols from the side of the car that can be used for added safety features like warning nearby cyclists that the door is about to open.

For Audi, the A6 E-Tron represents more than just another vehicle, it also acts as a template for future EVs on its next-gen platform called the “Premium Platform Electric” which is being developed with the help of Porsche and will be used in the automaker’s upcoming electric Macan.

The A6 E-Tronn may still just be a concept, but if the current EV market is any indicator, there’s a high probability it will actually see the light of day. Mercedes-Benz, Hyundai, and even Hummer are all in varying stages of launching their own next-gen EVs with some coming as soon as this year.

So if you’re dying for an electric Audi it might not be as much about crossing your fingers as much as it is buckling in and waiting patiently for the automaker to deliver.
