Fans of NYC-based style expert Drew Jessup love his curated looks and retro-tinged images, but finding this aesthetic was a decade-long journey. “I fell in love with fashion as a teenager because it was the art form that came closest to [representing] my taste, and I was desperate to feel understood in that way,” he says. “My journey has been more of a slow burn.” Jessup has been able to hone his signature look over time — one that combines his unique fashion perspective with the right tech to bring his style story to life.
When he’s not brainstorming narratives for upcoming projects, Jessup is shooting new looks to share with followers with his Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4. “I love fashion; I love photography; I love telling and sharing stories,” says Jessup. “I enjoy every aspect.” Jessup encourages others to discover their own style stories, too, and share them with their communities. “Figure out your niche — what rules to break to do something unique, and what your message is,” he says.
Creating thoughtful images plays a huge role in how Jessup communicates within the style space. “I don’t like visuals that feel like ‘here you go, here’s an outfit.’ I want people to be intentional about what they wear and to think of it as the first layer of an epic story unique to them,” he says.
When creating his posts, Jessup doesn’t need to look too far for inspiration. “I’m extremely sensitive and influenced by my surroundings, whether it’s people on the street, restaurants, museums, or ambiance in general,” he says. Jessup loves capturing these moments, and inspiring others to discover what sparks their creativity. “Give yourself grace and time to experiment, learn who you are, and you will have an incredible creation to share.”
“My personal style is best described as ‘vintage with flair.’ I like balance and cohesion and loathe statement pieces,” says Jessup. While he’s not adverse to being a chameleon, Jessup says he’s most comfortable in his daily uniform, which consists of classic denim or polished trousers, and a leather or corduroy blazer — all classic pieces that call for equally-timeless accessories.
Jessup imbues his images with a heady mix of nostalgia and contemporary flair, and getting the right angle means flexibility is key. When capturing looks, he likes having the freedom to shoot without a tripod. After getting the shot, checking back in with friends is easy. “I like the ‘Stay Connected’ feature for focus,” he says. “It shows notifications on the external screen, so I don’t get lost in a sea of distractions.”
“I want my outfit singing a harmonious song,” says Jessup, explaining how every part of his look matters — even his phone. “A high-tech accessory relates to how I view style overall,” he says, which means his phone design matters just as much as everything else he’s wearing. Every detail should contribute to the overall look.
