Lego’s version of ‘The Starry Night’ is an absolute masterpiece

This 2,316-piece set was a fan idea and pays tribute to Vincent van Gogh’s most iconic artwork, The Starry Night.

Thankfully, there’s no need for any real artistic talent to build this Lego version of Vincent van Gogh’s The Starry Night.

Oil to brick

The legendary Post-Impressionist painter has a ton of oil paintings to his name, but none more recognizable than his Starry Night painting depicting the night sky as van Gogh saw it above the Rhône river in France.

It’s nearly impossible to translate van Gogh’s flowy paint strokes, but Lego made a solid effort at capturing the deep color palette and feel of his iconic work with its many shades of blue and yellow bricks.

The set came from the Lego Ideas platform, where the Hong Kong-based 25-year-old Truman Cheng submitted the idea back in mid-2020.

Cheng said that the idea came to him when he was stacking Lego bricks together in random intervals and realized they looked like van Gogh’s brush strokes.

The set includes 2,316 pieces and a van Gogh minifigure. Coincidentally, Lego minifigures don’t have ears, so it didn’t even have to consider that design choice. The mini van Gogh does come with a brush, palette, easel and a mini painting.

Standing or hanging

When you’ve finished putting the set together, you can display it either standing or on the wall with its hanging feature.

The Starry Night set is coming June 1 to Lego stores and the MoMa Design Store in New York City, as well as MoMA’s online store, for $170.

If you’re a Lego VIP or a MoMA member, you can get the van Gogh set earlier on May 25.
