Ford’s new “smart mirror” isn’t a mirror at all: See how it works

A new Ford innovation could help make streets safer and improve things for all road users — drivers, bikers, and pedestrians alike.

The Ford Transit is one of the most popular delivery vehicles in the world. But a huge number of them have windowless cargo areas that restrict rear visibility. The only option was to use the side mirrors. But Ford has something to fix that.

Ford calls it the “Smart Mirror” and it’s a digital rear-view mirror that connects to a camera installed on the back of the van and shows the driver what’s behind them in real time.

The “mirror” shows a live feed from a camera on the back of the van.

It offers an improved field-of-view over a standard rear-view mirror, helping drivers see bicyclists, pedestrians, and other vehicles behind them.

The best part?

This isn’t restricted to new Transit vans. The part is compatible with any Transit built after 2014, or Transit Custom vans built after 2012. It can be installed at Ford dealerships.

Ford says companies installing the mirrors could see benefits from lower insurance rates to reduced vehicle downtime because of the potential for fewer crashes.

Alas, the Smart Mirror is currently only available in Europe.

We wouldn’t be surprised if it makes its way to this side of the pond before too long.
