Here’s what the beloved RPG publisher has in store for the next year.
The Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster series released updated versions of the first five Final Fantasy games on PC and mobile in 2020.
Final Fantasy VI (aka, the one everyone’s waiting for) gets the Pixel Remaster treatment in February, but it doesn’t have an exact release date yet.
Final Fantasy VII Remake still has a lot of ground to cover. There’s no word yet if the next part will arrive in 2022, but it’s a safe bet we’ll at least get some news about it.
Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis, a retelling of the original’s storyline plus all of its spinoffs, is due out for iOS and Android sometime in 2022. The compilation will be released in chapters throughout the year.
Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker just launched in December 2021. Unlike previous expansions, its story won’t continue in future patches, but more content is on the way.
Endwalker Patch 6.05 lands January 4, bringing the hardcore Savage version of the eight-player Pandaemonium raid introduced in December, along with a new currency for high-end gear.
Undated future patches will bring more raids (including a 24-player series), a new player housing zone, and the Stardew Valley-esque Island Sanctuary, which gives players their own farm to run.
Action RPG Final Fantasy Origin follows Jack, a man transported from another world who will eventually become the antagonist of the original Final Fantasy. Its grimdark tone is already divisive, but its combat was well received in a demo.
Stranger in Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin is due out on March 18 for PlayStation and Xbox consoles, plus PC.
Forspoken, which was first announced as Project Athia, follows a woman transported from modern-day New York City to a deeply troubled fantasy realm.
Perhaps learning from the much-hyped but long-delayed Final Fantasy XV, Square Enix hasn’t said much about Final Fantasy XVI since its reveal in 2020.
We know it will be darker in tone than previous entries, with more action-oriented combat. FFXIV producer Naoki Yoshida is also producing FFXVI, and The Last Remnant’s Hiroshi Takai is directing.
There’s no guarantee that 2022 will hold anything more for FFXVI, but a release date announcement — if not the release itself — is likely.
