SCUF's Instinct Xbox controller almost beats the DualSense

Inverse went hands-on with the Instinct as part of a preview. It’s the first third-party controller that feels truly worthy of this new generation of gaming.

Unlike some SCUF controllers, the shape sticks to a familiar form factor. But it doesn’t skimp on any of the luxurious upgrades SCUF is known for.

Bumpers are built into the chassis rather than detachable, and they’re easy to reach with these particular ergonomics.

There’s even a button to mute your active headset if your roommate says something embarrassing.

Thumbstick edges, bumper buttons, and triggers are all coated in a hexagonal gradient with increased friction, which enhances your grip.

Best of all, this approach carries over to the rubbery performance grip that comes with the Instinct Pro.

SCUF engineers measured nearly 100 hand sizes in playtests with various controllers. After scanning the data, they developed this pattern to optimize the grip.

SCUF’s take on the PS5 DualSense should launch sometime later in 2021. But for now, Xbox gamers can luxuriate in the best possible controller you can use on the Series X|S.
