With the start of 2022, it’s time for Final Fantasy XIV’s annual Heavensturn event, which pits you against a mighty beast representing the year’s Zodiac animal.

This year, you’ll face the massive white tiger Phantom Byakko. Fearsome as it may seem, defeating Phantom Byakko is simple if you follow these steps.

Square Enix

To begin Heavensturn, you’ll have to pick up the quest “Tangle with a Tora” from the Tora Bugyo NPC.

Square Enix

You’ll find him in Limsa Lominsa, Upper Decks (X:11.5, Y13.9), a quick jaunt from the Aftcastle Aetheryte shard.

After a short cutscene, he’ll send you on your way. Teleport to the Zephyr Gate Aetheryte shard, then head down to Middle La Noscea (X:24, Y:26) where the quest should be marked on your map.

If Byakko isn’t there, don’t fret! You need to wait for the “Tora Tora, Burning Bright” FATE to appear. It shouldn’t take more than five minutes to spawn, but a bug on the event’s first day caused waits of up to 30 minutes.

Square Enix says it fixed the bug as of January 6, but if you find yourself waiting longer than normal, just know that Byakko will eventually turn up.

The FATE is only level five, so remember to click the Level Sync button below the quest description to begin. From there, the fight is straightforward.

Byakko uses large but easily dodged area of effect attacks and occasionally summons minions to throw out more AOEs. Even with a small group of other participants, it’s an easy fight.

From there, simply head back to Tora Bugyo to collect your spoils. You’ll have to choose between a gold and silver Tora Kabuto, but you can actually get both right away.

Square Enix

Just pick one, then talk to the Tora Shonin <Festival Supplier> NPC a few steps away. Defeating Byakko gives you a stack of Heavensturn of the Tiger Tickets, which you can spend here.

Square Enix

For five tickets, you can pick up whichever Tora Kabuto you missed and fill out your glamour collection.

For three tickets, you’ll get the enormous White Tiger folding screen to decorate your house.

Square Enix

You can spend your remaining tickets on an underwhelming food item or a stack of Magicked Prisms to delight and annoy passersby.

Square Enix

Tora Bugyo now offers a quick repeatable quest that just entails talking to another NPC and gets you more Magicked Prisms. Heavensturn activities will stick around until January 19.
