I was chopping carrots when a knot caught in my throat. A song I’d listened to a thousand times before hit an emotional high point, except rather than my typical Gen 1 AirPods, I was listening on a pair of Audeze Mobius headphones.

At the time, I couldn’t quite understand why the song hit me differently, but now I know it had everything to do with the Mobius.

Audeze” (pronounced like a mashup of “Audio” with “Odyssey”) is a prestigious audio brand that utilizes tech originally developed by NASA to deliver unreal sound.

Audeze

Audeze’s most hardcore headphones, like the CRBNs, cost a staggering $4,500. But even the company’s more modest options like the Mobius ($399) are a vast improvement over your average pair.

Audeze

Audeze is an expensive brand for audiophiles who understand buzz terms that sound like science fiction (i.e., “planar magnetic drivers”), but that gasp-worthy $399 price tag is totally worth it.

The staggering array of Mobius features includes several you’d be hard-pressed to find anywhere else.

Mobius is designed with gamers in mind, and the more recent iteration dubbed Penrose ($299) is tailored to either the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S.

Planar magnetic drivers in both are a complex system of evenly-spaced magnets that trap a thin, electrically active membrane within a magnetic field. The audio it generates sounds mind-bogglingly crisp.

Whether you’re listening to music, watching a movie, or playing video games on virtually any device, the soundscape just hits you differently with Mobius.

It’s like you’re at a concert and you can feel the music in your chest and throat.

Its most obvious gimmick is 3D audio, which simulates a point of origin and also takes the layout of the room into consideration.

Mobius tracks your head movements up to a thousand times per second and will update sound localization dynamically as you move.

The experience is a little bit disorienting at first.

But in competitive action games like Fortnite or Warzone, that dynamic surround sound (up to 7.1) is a huge boon.

Mobius is stylish and comfortable despite being a bit bulky.

The memory foam earpads are comfy enough to wear while napping on a flight.

A wired connection or Bluetooth works on virtually any device.

The left ear has volume dials for mic input and audio output, but it’s also where the power and 3D buttons are, along with the audio jack and mic slot.

Usually a device this expensive comes with some drawbacks, but the versatility and quality of the Mobius mean that no matter your audio needs, you’re getting the very best.
