Released in 2007 and loosely based on Philip K. Dick’s post-apocalyptic short story “The Golden Man,” Next tells the story of a man (Cage) who can see into the future by viewing every possible outcome of any single action.
The original script stuck closer to Dick’s story and featured the author’s anti-authoritarian streak. Then, Cage’s production company Saturn Films bought the rights and rewrote the entire thing.
In Next, Cage’s character is a magician who uses his superpowers to seduce Jessica Biel. (You’ll never really buy this romance, but that’s part of the fun).
Julianne Moore also plays an FBI agent who wants Cage’s character to help her find a bomb.
Next is very far from a perfect movie, even by the standards of early 2000s science fiction, but it’s still a lot of fun with a mind-blowing ending you won’t see coming. Watch it now on Amazon Prime.
