HBO Max's sci-fi offerings expanded in January, but a few great movies are leaving as well.

Here are the five best sci-fi movies leaving HBO Max at the end of this month.

5. Planet of the Apes (2001)

A remake of 1968's Planet of the Apes had been in the works for years before the version that was finally produced came to light. The Tim Burton remake received poor reviews and led to a much better liked reboot in 2011.

4. Blade (1998) & Blade II (2002)

Blade and its sequels are adaptations of Marvel's lesser-known vampire hunter series, and a reboot is currently in the works. The third entry in the series, Blade: Trinity, will remain on HBO Max.

3. Mars Attacks! (1996)

Tim Burton's alien invasion comedy Mars Attacks! got mixed reviews when it was released, but has gained a cult following in the years since.

It blends gratuitous violence and slapstick humor with a star-studded cast, including two roles inexplicably played by Jack Nicholson.

2. Ad Astra (2019)

Ad Astra is a father-son drama crossed with sci-fi, starring Brad Pitt as an astronaut searching for his father who disappeared on an interplanetary trip. More about mood than adventure, it's punctuated with some dizzying effects sequences.

1. Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)

Following the surprise success of 2017's Wonder Woman, Gal Gadot reprises her role in the first of two planned sequels. The movie premiered on HBO Max, but will temporarily leave after January 24.
