The weirdest superhero movie of the century is finally streaming on HBO Max

by Jake Kleinman

When Disney bought 20th Century Fox, Marvel fans rejoiced because it meant the X-Men could finally interact with the Avengers on the big screen.

But first, Disney had to deal with New Mutants.

The X-Men teen horror movie had already been delayed before the merger. Then, Covid-19 happened.

Because of complicated legal reasons, Marvel couldn’t just drop New Mutants on Disney+. Instead, the movie got a limited theatrical release before finally turning up on... HBO Max.

Is New Mutants worth your time? The answer is complicated.

This movie has a stellar cast that includes Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones), Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things), and a pre-Queen’s Gambit Anya Taylor-Joy.

It also strikes a unique tone unlike anything seen before in the MCU or any X-Men movie. Director Josh Boone said he was inspired by a very specific comic: issue 18 of the original New Mutants.

“It felt like Stephen King meets John Hughes.”

Despite some cool ideas, New Mutants is kind of a mess. But it’s a fun look into an alternate universe where the X-Men stayed separate from the MCU and got weird instead. Watch it now on HBO Max.
