It's been a while since Apple first announced its Asimov-inspired original series: Foundation. But on June 22, the company revealed the first teaser trailer and promised a 2021 release.

Here are 14 awe-inspiring photos from the first trailer for Foundation...

Apple

Jared Harris stars as Hari Seldon, the inventor of psychohistory, a type of cultural study that can predict the future.

Apple

A lot of the action in the first Foundation novel takes place on Trantor, the capital planet of a future galactic Empire.

Apple

Lou Llobell is playing Gaal, one of Seldon's first psychohistorian recruits. In the books, this character was a man.

Apple

Some critics and historians credit Foundation with perfecting the "space opera," genre. There's certainly a lot of sweet spaceships in this new trailer.

Apple

Lee Pace is playing "Brother Day," at least one of the Emperors in the history of Foundation. This exact Emperor seems to be a new invention for the TV series.

Apple

Asimov's future history is sprawling and complicated. Imagine the Star Wars galaxy if it actually made sense.

Apple

Because Seldon is a good deal younger than he was in the first novel, some fans think the series will draw-upon a prequel novel called Prelude to Foundation.

Apple

This giant "space elevator" seems to be positioned above the planet Trantor, but this could be the planet Terminus, the future capital of the Foundation.

Apple

Could this be Gaal arriving on the planet Terminus?

Apple

Leah Harvey is playing Salvor. In the books, Salvor is an early ruler of Terminus. Their most famous quote is: "Violence is the last refuge of the incompetent."

Apple

Laura Birn is playing Demerzel. If we tell you what Demerzel's deal is, it's basically a huge spoiler. Demerzel is a big deal. You've been warned.

Apple

This seems like this is the death of one of the galactic Emperors. Or maybe Hari Seldon?

Apple

One of the biggest themes of Foundation is the notion of using all information to manipulate future history. Maybe somebody is destroying Seldon's writings here?

Apple

Adapting Foundation is going to be interesting. It's a famous sci-fi novel series for a reason, but it also spans several generations. If you thought Dune seemed dense or complicated, better buckle-up. This is about as hard as hard science fiction gets.
