After more than three decades of starring in film roles, Bruce Willis is retiring from acting following a diagnosis of aphasia. While not all of Willis’ movies are available on streaming, you can still take a tour of his impressive career with the right subscriptions.
Even playing an unremarkable character in an incredibly silly movie, Willis never hits a false note. He lends a lot of emotion to an underwritten part, making him far and away the best part of Armageddon.
Brad Pitt gets a lot of (deserved) credit for his role in 12 Monkeys, but Willis also turns in a star performance. He’s playing against type here, as a bedraggled, broken time traveler in Terry Gilliam’s bizarre sci-fi classic.
Teaming up with M. Night Shyamalan a second time for Unbreakable let Willis dive even deeper into pathos. As a stoic superhero, he pulls off impressive action scenes and melancholy introspection with equal skill.
The Sixth Sense marked a major shift for Willis, who was mostly an action star at that point. Here he plays a sad, sensitive child psychologist, proving his range extends far beyond gun-toting heroes.
Playing boxer Butch Coolidge, Willis has an all-time bad day in Pulp Fiction. His mix of charm and bravado makes him a perfect fit for this down-on-his-luck tough guy just trying to make the best of his shattered life.

Willis’ breakout film role remains a classic. As everyman John McClane in Die Hard, he’s completely in his elements — tough, funny, resourceful, and incredibly fun to watch.
