While you wait for Dune, here are three far-out story details from the original Frank Herbert novels to give you a sense of just how weird this sci-fi universe gets. (Warning! Possible spoilers for the 2020 movie ahead.)

3. The main character gives up his powers to become a bad space emperor

After Paul Atreides (Chalamet) rises to power in Dune, he almost immediately pulls a Luke Skywalker in The Last Jedi and becomes a desert hermit.

2. One of the main characters becomes an immortal clone of himself

In the books, Mamoa’s character Duncan Idaho dies only to return as a copy of himself, eventually losing his memories by the sixth book.

1. Paul’s son turns into a giant sandworm

You already knew about the sandworms, but did you know that in a Dune sequel, Paul’s son becomes a giant worm and rules the galaxy for 3,000 years? Surprisingly, he turns out to be a ruthlessly competent if somewhat boring leader.
